Here at Larned High School (LHS), our holiday breaks can be what gets us through the year. Students and staff are given three days off of school to give thanks for all that they have, and many staff and students have some fun stories to tell about their break. We’ve decided to dive into how the students and staff at Larned High School are celebrating their Thanksgiving.
Some students have fun but basic Thanksgiving traditions such as hunting as a family, praying over their meal, watching football, and napping after the meal. Some people have very original traditions. One student at LHS says his/her family kills the turkey on Thanksgiving Day every year before cooking and serving it. Another student says that his/her family and friends have a swimming, running, and jumping contest each year! Then, another student told us that he/she has a Nerf play hunt, and one of her friends or cousins dresses as a turkey and everyone else chases them down with toy Nerf guns to “hunt” the turkey. Whoever “kills” the turkey gets to dress as the turkey next year, and it starts all over again!
What is Thanksgiving Day without food, really? Many students at LHS have shared a few of their favorite Thanksgiving foods. These favorites include sweet potatoes, stuffing, pie, and cheesy potatoes. However, some kids have some strange dishes at their dinner table. One student mentioned that they have a cranberry salsa appetizer, and another student claims they have an original popcorn salad as a side dish. By far, the weirdest Thanksgiving dish from an LHS student has got to be gizzards for Thanksgiving!
There are big plans and small plans for Thanksgiving here at LHS. 48% of students are staying in town for the holiday, and 22% of students will be going out of state for their big feast. Mr. Scheideman, an English teacher here at LHS, will be going to the Virgin Islands for his Thanksgiving break! He told me, “My wife and I never had a honeymoon, so this trip will serve as that, an anniversary gift, a vacation, and a break in general; I am very excited for the trip.” It is exciting to hear how students are spending their Thanksgiving break, and we hope they enjoy their traditions, no matter how weird the traditions are!
