Each year, LHS hosts an outstanding prom for their juniors and seniors. While this event is anticipated year-long, it takes a hefty amount of time, manpower, and most importantly, money. So, how does the high school manage to create such a beautiful event while not breaking the bank? If you ask any junior, senior, or prom sponsor how they pull this off, they would answer with one word; Chocolate.
Throughout the years, the chocolate bar fundraiser has been a resounding success. With over 200 boxes sold every year, the event has become one of the most successful in Larned high school history. However, this year, a change was made that could have had a detrimental impact on both the funds and the prom. In previous years, a chocolate bar was sold for $1, but due to inflation and other unfortunate circumstances, the price has been raised to $2 per bar. While this increase in price might have been expected to decrease sales, the junior students have risen to the challenge and kept the chocolate sales increasing and steady.
While the students play a large role in the fundraising, none of it would be possible without the high school’s amazing prom sponsor, Mrs. Fitzpatrick. Mrs. Fitz has been the main prom sponsor for 25 years. However, this year marks her final year of overseeing the event. During an interview, she was asked the question “Does this fundraiser have a greater impact on prom than other ones?” To answer this, she stated, “This is the last fundraiser that the students can do in their high school years. So, if a certain class does not have enough money for prom, the chocolate bar fundraiser has the biggest impact.” The high school prom committee will definitely miss Mrs. Fitz but with her advice and mentoring over the past years, the remaining sponsors will fill her shoes with no fear.
The chocolate bar fundraiser is something that significantly helps fund the high school prom, and we are excited to see how it grows in the future!
