Every year, Larned High School hosts a fun and exciting Spirit Week. This week-long event is filled with engaging themes, and the enthusiasm that makes Larned a unique place to learn and be the best version of yourself.
In previous years, the daily themes have varied with certain days becoming a tradition such as Orange and Black Day, and the Color Wars Day. The recurring Orange and Black Day has become a fan favorite among the students where they can show off their Indian Pride. Whereas Color Wars is a hefty competition among the students throughout all high school grades, with the colors changing every year, of course. The grade level with the most students participating wins the challenge. This encourages all students to participate in their friendly feud.
While students have a blast during spirit week, nothing can top the enthusiasm of Larned’s teachers and staff members. Whether it is matching costumes, over-the-top outfits, or even full-body paint, the staff at LHS make this event worth every bit of preparation.
One person who is very passionate about dressing up for Spirit Week is Jean Simmons. To say that she goes all out is an understatement for Mrs. Simmons. She is best known for her elaborate costumes and exciting ideas. Students of all ages have fond memories of how Mrs. Simmons makes the week that much crazier through body paint and larger-than-life props. During an interview, she talked about how she wished that more students would participate in the fun she then stated “It’s ok to stand out, to be different, to have fun. These are the things that you are going to remember in 20 years. When you look back at the yearbook that is what you will remember. Enjoy your high school experience instead of treating it like a job, it goes so fast.”
In conclusion, Spirit Week at Larned High School not only creates school spirit and camaraderie among students and staff but also creates lasting memories that students will have after they graduate.
